Description
“Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof”
Leviticus 25:10
“Please I can’t breathe. My stomach hurts. My neck hurts. Everything hurts. They’re going to kill me” George Floyd RIP.
The above were the dying words of George Floyd, another victim of American’s “Law-enforcers’ jungle justice.
Bard Eagle and the Liberty Bell are two of the American national iconic images. The Liberty Bell cracked right from its creation and America’s founding fathers left it cracked as if they meant it to show the world that America’s Liberty is not perfect as there was no liberty for people of colour then in America because of the enslavement of African-Americans was still lawful in some parts of America then. Since the abolition of slavery and the enforcement of integration, there is no equity for all Americans. The killing of George Floyd and other killings of black people made me think figuratively that America’s Liberty is not only cracked but it is a Broken Liberty which is the title of this painting - The Broken Liberty.
To illustrate the Americans broken liberty, I positioned the dying body of George Floyd under the broken Liberty Bell with bullets holes and his head under the claws of the eagle tagged as “killer police.” I painted the pictures of some African Americans murdered by America police officers on the Eagle’s chest as medals of shame of present-day America and the dangling dark figures of the hanged Africa-Americans as the tassels of the evil of the American past to echo a line from Billie Holiday’s song “Strange Fruit: Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze. Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees.”
In the front of the burning commercial building are the Donald Trump’s answer to the cry of the Black Lives Matters protesters - his weapons of DOMINATION- the national guards standing on the Black Lives Matters placards to depicts that Donald Trump is saying “Black Lives Matter my foot.” This is to depict that Donald Trump preferred to protect American’s economy rather than to protect African Americans’ lives.
The three doves at the top of this painting flying in the midst of the flame depict Trinity. With this, I am evoking the Trinity God to bless America with peace.
As a political artist with my intention to evoke and provoke emotions and feelings with my works all of which I did with this painting. This painting may evoke anger and indignation again American system. This anger and indignation should not be used to burn down America but to be used to bring positive change.
